Nissan GT Academy Finals: Race to Silverstone, UK

My third and last event that I got to cover was the Nissan GT Academy Finals: Race to Silverstone, UK. It was the first time I ever experienced the real struggles of photography. Where you had bend your backs, find the perfect angle as fast as you can and squeeze in with the rest of the photographers surrounding you. All I had as my iphone while the rest rest have their professional cameras out. It was very hard to get a decent picture especially as there were twenty finalists followed by the top 6 finalists of the competition. Another struggle was trying to remember every ones names and what they were saying. I was using my multi-tasking skills to the max that night.

The event was to announce the top 6 finalists who will win a chance to go all the way to Unite Kingdom to train and become real race card divers. They entered the competition by playing Grand Turismo in the mall then the top 20 would be picked. They were malls over the Philippines such as Metro Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan De Oro.

Then the top finalists came together that night Wednesday July 15, 2015 for the announcement of the lucky winners. Their excitement on their faces lead to bright red faces and tears in their eyes. Upon getting on the stage they would automatically put their hoodies on to cover the excitement and disbelief on their face. It touched my heart to be able to witness something like this, from just playing on a Playstation on virtual reality they will get to be behind wheels on real race cars. This must be a dream come true for them and their families.

It was a great that I got to be at the front stage capturing this special moment for them. It was another highlight of my internship. I would love to do this again in the future.

Here is the article I wrote for my internship

Along with them they will be mentored by Filipino-Swiss Lotus F1 Junior Team race car driver Marlon Stockinger who will be with them throughout their whole time at the academy.
The competition was launched on March 25, where over 15,000 virtual racers from all over the Philippines such as Metro Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan De Oro came together to play the Grand Turismo care racing game on PlayStation. They were given over 30,000 trails that was during three-months of live events.
The competition was not just about race driving but they were also tested with ability and physical strength like hurdle tests such as the sergeant jump, planking, push ups and the bleep tests.
NPI President and Managing Director Antonio Zara said, “We’re happy to be giving aspiring racers and gamers the opportunity to turn their dreams into reality.
